Vitiligo Skin Disease And Depigmentation
Vitiligo word is derived from Latin word “��VITIUM”�� (blemish) and the suffix- “��IGO”��. According to the definition of national institute of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin disease (NIMS) vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder in which white patches appear on the skin on different parts of the body and the hair in the affected area may turn white.
The major symptoms & signs of the disease are appearance of white patches on different skin areas. These white patches either are in small or in large sizes depending on the disease condition. They may be limited to some body areas of covered whole body parts. Usually the first patch is appeared on most sun exposed areas. Approximately 15 percent people get white patches on skin areas like face, hands, feet, arms, legs etc as they are most exposed to sun light. Depigmentation also experienced to see in the mucous membrane layer of skin and retina of eyes.
The nine major causes of the vitiligo are heredity, lack of nutritional factors, and excessive usage of broad spectrum antibiotics, GIT factors involvement, psychological or emotional stress, endocrinal diseases, physical injury and chronic irritation, immune system disorder and sun burn / sun exposure.
As vitiligo major cause is associated with depigmentation thus due to depigmentation skin special cells melanocytes stops performing its function deliberately, as a result deficit if melanin cells happen in skin.
Melanocytes cells are present in the Basel layer of the skin. They produce melanin cells in skin. Melanin cells further produces yellowish, blackish & brownish pigmentary substances. The responsibility of pigment cells is to give skin a natural coloration. Due to lower productivity of melanin cells in skin cells & tissues becomes depigmented.
The appearance chances of vitiligo disease are equal in male & female, with no age, race bar. The disease affects approximately 40 to 50 million people of the world wide by the percentage of 1 to 2 percent.
The vitiligo skin disorder depigmented patches spreading is a progressive process in nature. The white patches are appeared in small in size and become large by the end of time. The disease is incurable but many Vitiligo treatment helps patients in the reproduction of melanin cells in skin.
